PA6 plastic raw materials performance introduction

PA6 (polyamide 6 or nylon 6) is a translucent or opaque milky-white crystalline polymer that has good thermoplasticity, light weight, good toughness, chemical resistance and durability. It is widely used for structural components due to its good mechanical strength and stiffness; it is also used in the manufacture of bearings due to its good wear resistance properties.

 

Typical applications of PA6 plastic raw material:

 

Industrial production is widely used in the manufacture of bearings, round gears, cams, bevel gears, a variety of rollers, pulleys, pump impellers, fan blades, worm gears, propellers, screws, nuts, gaskets, high-pressure seals, oil-resistant seals, oil-resistant containers, housings, hoses, cable sheaths, shear pulley bushes, bullhead planer slider, solenoid distributor valve seat, cold aging equipment, gaskets, bearing cages, automobiles and tractors on the Various oil pipelines, pistons, ropes, drive belts, textile machinery and industrial equipment, zero fog material, as well as daily necessities and packaging film.

 

PA6 plastic raw materials for injection molding process conditions:

 

Drying treatment: because PA6 is easy to absorb water, so the drying before processing should be especially careful. If the material is supplied in waterproof packaging, the container should be kept airtight. If the humidity is greater than 0,2%, it is recommended to dry the material in hot air above 80°C for 16 hours. If the material has been exposed to air for more than 8 hours, vacuum drying at 105°C for more than 8 hours is recommended.

 

Melting temperature: 230~280℃, 250~280℃ for reinforced varieties.

 

Mold temperature: 80~90°C. Mold temperature significantly affects the degree of crystallinity, which in turn affects the mechanical properties of the plastic part. For structural parts where crystallinity is important, a mold temperature of 80~90°C is recommended. Higher mold temperatures are also recommended for thin-walled, long-process parts. Increasing the mold temperature increases the strength and stiffness of the part, but decreases the toughness. If the wall thickness is greater than 3mm, it is recommended to use 20 ~ 40 ℃ low temperature mold. For glass reinforced materials mold temperature should be greater than 80 ℃.

 

Injection pressure: Generally between 750~1250 bar (depends on material and product design).

 

Injection speed: High speed (slightly lower for reinforced materials).

 

Runner and gate: Since the solidification time of PA6 is very short, the location of the gate is very important. The gate aperture should not be less than 0.5*t (t is the thickness of the molded part). If a hot runner is used, the gate size should be smaller than if a conventional runner is used because the hot runner prevents the material from solidifying too early. If a submerged gate is used, the small diameter of the gate should be 0.75mm.

 

Chemical and physical properties of PA6 plastic material:

 

The chemical and physical properties of PA6 are very similar to PA66, however, it has a lower melting point and a wide range of process temperatures. It has better impact and solubility resistance than PA66, but is also more hygroscopic. In order to improve the mechanical properties of PA6, a variety of modifiers are often added, glass is a common additive, and sometimes synthetic rubbers such as EPDM and SBR are added to improve impact resistance.

 

For products without additives, PA6 shrinkage between 1% and 1,5%. The addition of glass fiber additives can reduce the shrinkage rate to 0.3% (but slightly higher in the direction perpendicular to the process). Shrinkage of molded assemblies is mainly influenced by the crystallinity and hygroscopicity of the material. The actual shrinkage is also a function of the molded part design, wall thickness and other process parameters.
